Swallows On The Wing

Illustration of a black faced sheep in profile with a quotation from William Shakespeare “Nature teaches beasts to know their friends.”

This quotation is from Act 2, scene 1 of the play Coriolanus, where a Roman nobleman, Menenius enters with Sinicius and Brutus who are Tribunes of the people. The conversation goes as follows:

Menenius: The augurer tells me we shall have news to-night.
Brutus: Good or bad?
Menenius: Not according to the prayer of the people, for they love not Martius.
Sicinius: Nature teaches beasts to know their friends.
Menenius: Pray you, who does the wolf love?
Sicinius: The lamb.
